Perception of Italian liquids by Japanese listeners: comparisons to Spanish liquids
نویسنده
چکیده
The present research tests Japanese listeners’ perception of Italian liquids under the framework of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM), a model of non-native speech perception. The study examines the discrimination and the identification of Italian liquids (/l/, /r/, /ll/, /rr/ and /ʎ/), while comparing the results with those of replicated perception experiments of Spanish liquids (/l/, /ɾ/ and /r/). Japanese listeners showed poor discrimination performance on Italian /l/-/r/ and very good discrimination performance on the other Italian liquid contrasts (/l/-/ll/, /l/-/rr/, /ll/-/r/, /ll/-/rr/, /r/-/rr/, /l/-/ʎ/, /ll/-/ʎ/, /r/-/ʎ/ and /rr/-/ʎ/). The listeners perceptually assimilated Italian /l/ and /r/ to Japanese /r/, Italian /ll/ to Japanese /Qr/, Italian /rr/ to Japanese /rur/, and Italian /ʎ/ to Japanese /rj/. The findings indicate that PAM accounts for the perception of Italian liquids by Japanese listeners.

متن کاملDoes allophonic knowledge of L1 contribute to the correct discrimination of non-native sounds?
The present paper investigated the perception of four Punjabi liquids /ɾ ɽ l ɭ/ and two stops /d ɖ/ by Japanese listeners. It has been reported that Japanese listeners have difficulty in perceiving the two-way liquid contrast of English because Japanese has only one liquid phoneme. Japanese /r/ has, in fact, a rich allophonic inventory. However, no detailed perception studies have been conducte...
متن کاملJapanese adults can learn to produce English /r/ and /l/ accurately.
As is well known, Japanese adults who have just begun to learn English often err in producing /r/ and /l/ because their native language does not possess such liquid consonants. The aim of this study was to determine if Japanese adults eventually learn to produce /r/ and /l/ accurately in words like read and lead. Liquids spoken by 12 native Japanese speakers who had lived in the United States f...
متن کاملContribution of prosody to the perception of a foreign accent: a study based on Spanish/Italian modified speech
In this article, we attempt to quantify the contribution of prosody (timing and melody) to the perception of a foreign accent, by using a prosodic transplantation paradigm. For this experiment, a dozen sentences, which are spoken in (almost) the same way in Italian and Spanish, were recorded. They were read by 3 Spanish monolinguals, 3 Italian monolinguals and 3 Spanish/Italian bilinguals (once...
